WORLD BANK: Afghanistan signs $55m grant with WB to support technical and vocational education

KABUL, 11 May 2013 – The Ministry of Finance today signed a grant agreement of $55 million with the World Bank. The grant is being provided by the International Development Association (IDA) – the World Bank’s concessional lending arm – to assist Afghan youth to advance their skills and competencies, enabling them to play a constructive role in the country’s growing economy. The Afghanistan - Second Skills Development Project (ASDP II) focuses on building systems and institutions in the formal sector that will impart technical and vocational skills in diverse job streams.

UNESCO PRESS RELEASE: Italy grants US$ 1.2m for heritage preservation and development in Afghanistan

KABUL, 12 March 2013 – UNESCO will receive a grant of US$ 1.2 million from the Government of Italy for Heritage Conservation, Development and Coordination in Afghanistan. This important project will be jointly implemented by the UNESCO Kabul Office and different departments of the Ministry of Information and Culture throughout the country, with an operational focus on conservation and presentation of the World Heritage Site of Shar-i-Gholgholah (Bamyan).

PRESS RELEASE: World Bank provides US$ 100 m to Afghanistan for basic health and hospital services

WASHINGTON, 28 February 2013 ─ The World Bank approved today a US$ 100 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) to help the Government of Afghanistan expand the scope, quality and coverage of basic health and essential hospital services in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan System Enhancement for Health Action in Transition (SEHAT) Program will cover both rural and urban areas in 22 of the country’s 34 provinces. It will also strengthen the national health system and build the capacity of the Ministry of Public Health to effectively perform its stewardship functions at the central and provincial levels.

Japan and United Nations jointly announce assistance of US$ 281 million to Afghanistan

KABUL, 28 February 2013 – The Government of Japan and the United Nations announced US$ 281 million of assistance to Afghanistan for 14 projects to be implemented by nine UN agencies at a signing ceremony held today in Kabul. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mr. Jamaher Anwari, the Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, H.E. Mr. Hiroshi Takahashi, Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Yoshikazu Yamada, the Resident Representative of JICA, Mr. Mark Bowden, UNAMA Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General/Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Government counterparts and the representatives from the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes. WFP PRESS RELEASE - US$ 5 per person: Luxembourg is highest per capita donor to WFP Afghanistan

Kabul, 18 February 2013 – With a donation of more than US$ 660,000 (€ 500,000), Luxembourg is the first country to contribute to the regular operations of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan in 2013. This donation makes Luxembourg, a landlocked country located in western Europe with a population of about 525,000, the highest per capita donor to WFP Afghanistan.
