Building new transmission infrastructure and fostering regional cooperation among four countries
WASHINGTON, March 27, 2014—The World Bank Group’s Board of Directors approved today US$ 526.5 million in grant and credit financing for the Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000) for four countries: Afghanistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. This transmission infrastructure project will put in place the commercial and institutional arrangements as well as the infrastructure required for 1,300 megawatts (MW) of sustainable electricity trade. The total project cost is estimated at US$ 1.17 billion and several other development partners will provide financing for CASA-1000, including the Islamic Development Bank and United States Agency for International Development.

MoRR and UNHCR launch aid package to assist Afghans facing harsh winter conditions
Kabul, 15 December 2013 (UNHCR) – In Kabul City today, the Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, UNHCR and WFP began distributing blankets, charcoal, plastic sheet, Jerry cans, kitchen sets and other winter supplies, as well as food rations, to over 1,200 vulnerable Afghan families as part of a countrywide drive to help 26,000 families survive harsh winter conditions.

One full year of no polio cases in the Southern Region of Afghanistan
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN, 19 November 2013 – Afghanistan’s Southern Region has today, for the first time ever, reached one full year without any reported cases of wild poliovirus, giving a boost to the country’s fight against the crippling disease. This milestone will encourage the polio effort in the Eastern Region, which continues to fight an outbreak of polio that has seen nine cases reported so far this year.

Opium crop cultivation rises a record 36 per cent in Afghanistan
Kabul/Vienna, 13 November 2013 (UNODC) – Opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan rose 36 per cent in 2013, a record high, according to the 2013 Afghan opium survey released today in Kabul by the Ministry of Counter Narcotics and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

UNHCR PRESS STATEMENT: Over 1800 IDP Afghan families receive food and household assistance

Mazar-e-Sharif, 29 September 2013 (UNHCR): The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have jointly assisted 1,827 vulnerable families displaced by conflict in the past four months with household items and food packages. Assistance is provided in close coordination and cooperation with Departments of Refugees and Repatriation (DoRRs) in the provinces.

FAO PRESS RELEASE: JICA provides $3.3 million for technical support to Irrigation Directorate

Kabul, 22 September 2013 - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a 3,310,000 USD (three million three hundred and ten thousand), contract agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide technical support to the Irrigation Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock (MAIL). This is a testimony to the Government of Japan’s continued long term commitment to support Afghanistan’s efforts to tackle root causes of food insecurity through JICA’s Capacity Development and Institutional Strengthening (CDIS) project for the agriculture sector.
