PRESS STATEMENT: UNAMA condemns killing of civilians in Kandahar
KABUL, 8 April 2014 – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) strongly condemns an attack in the southern province of Kandahar which killed 15 civilians and injured another five through the use of a pressure-plate improvised explosive device (PP-IED).

KABUL, 2 July 2013 – Below is the near-verbatim transcript of a press conference by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jan Eliasson, just before wrapping up his visit to Afghanistan.

Jan Eliasson: Thank you very much. Good morning. I am Jan Eliasson. I am the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. I have been here for five-day visit, which is unusually long for me. I found it extremely interesting and very useful to be here in Kabul and also to go to Kandahar, where I spent a day on Sunday.

Ahead of Council meeting, UN envoy highlights rise in Afghan civilian casualties

11 June 2013 – Ahead of next week’s Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in the country, Ján Kubiš, highlighted that the security environment for Afghan civilians has worsened this year, with a 24 per cent rise in the number of civilians killed and injured compared to the same time period in 2012.

Kabul, 19 February 2013
– Civilian casualties in Afghanistan’s armed conflict decreased for the first time in six years, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said today in releasing its 2012 Annual Report on Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict prepared in coordination with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Afghanistan civilian casualty figures drop for the first time in 6 years

February 2013 – The number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan’s armed conflict dropped for the first time since the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) started documenting the trend in 2007, said a UN report released in Kabul today.
